I have fond memories of my first car; a '65 Rambler American. It had a 3 speed with electric overdrive. Big white button on top of gearshift. You could engage OD in 2nd, pust the button while changing to 3rd, then engage it at 3rd, giving 5 gears. You could push the button and mash the gas for a "passing gear". The gearshift was floor console mounted, and next to it was one that slid forward or back to lock out overdrive if you didn't want it. With the overdrive not locked out, clutch was only needed in first; optional for other shifts. You did need it for downshifts. Would love to have that car back now.
