I don't like to let mine idle for too long, simply because the engine compartment gets SO-O-O-O-O bloody hot! I have let it idle at the bank a few times for more than 2-3 minutes, while using the ATM...car idled fine. The temp gauge stayed in the middle, but then, IT ALWAYS registers in the middle! (Not worth much, I'm afraid). I want to do the column three gauge pod like so many of the other members have done. Definitely one of the gauges will be an accurate temperature gauge!
