From my experience this is true. I recently replaced the stock air-filter with a K & N (drop-in/high-flow) Performance Air-Filter--NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE--turbo spools up faster, improved acceleration. [8)] For now at least, I'm leaving the silencers in place.
