As long as the crank is not on top dead center, you'll (he'll) be fine. 1/4 to 1/2 turn off should be good. The design of the 2.4 is that when pistons 1 and 4 are up top, 2 and 3 are on the bottom. Anything other than top dead will have all 4 away from the top.

And, you can rotate them independently.
