The trade off is turbulence that is necessary for disbursement of fuel mixture vs flow. The rough surface effectively reduces the size of the oroficeby causing friction eddys along the surface. In a N/A F.I. car this can be a good thing because it can cause better fuel atomization. In a turbo, the turbulence benefit may be reduced by the high flow rates. There are camps on both sides.

If you are looking to move air in and out though, honing and port-matching to keep the path eddy free should work.
