The spring mod, bending the wastegate bracket, crushing the can, and heavier internal spring all do the same thing (the RAGE and AGP cans) - raise the minimum amount of boost before the wastegate can open regardless of what the wastegate solenoid wants to do. The reason this works better than a MBC is the pressure upstream of the turbo also 'helps' open the wastegate, which bleeding off pressure to the wastegate can doesn't address.

However, like anything else you can go too far - the wastegate is there to prevent the compressor from going nuts and making so much boost the engine blows. If you don't know what you're doing, you'll end up like the dude at srtforums...
