Not necessary to remove the retainers. I'd avoid that at all cost. Did you lube the bushings before you slid them on the shaft, and then add a little more when they were in place before tightening them down ? Anwway, just lube them as best as you can the grease should work its way into the bushing. As difficult as it was to get the nuts on the retainers started and tight, it would have to scream like a banshee to force me to loosen or take the retainers off. I still have mine on the firm setting. Onedivinehammer pointed out that Eibach does not recommend that setting for use on wet roads. I will be trying the softer setting as soon as I get the time to reset the end link connections. Meantime I have a question in to a mechanic to see if there is any other possible solution to the noisy bushings. I'll post after I hear back.......
