Byron Roth was planning to retire and neither of his techs wanted to purchase the business from him.

Byron's C C is correct. If the MIL is lit, you have codes to read. Sometimes a pending code will trip the light. They will not read on the odometer, but a scanner will read them. I've tripped some pending codes for misfire during my initial nitrous tuning at the drag strip.
They are easy to read and clear with a scan tool.
Rememer, the odometer test will only read engine/emission codes. There are hundreds of codes for body, trans, abs, etc...
