In most applications, you can change the filter every OTHER oil change. This goes for synthetic as well. Synthetic does not break down as quickly as mineral oil, and therefore can double (or more) you oil change interval. Still not cost effective at 4X mineral.

The new mineral oils (labeled GF3) are very good. They essentially perform like synthetics for a quarter of the cost. Race turbo applications are the only places where synthetic truly outperform, due to their temperature resistance.
