I've heard both arguments (change synthetic at the regularly scheduled interval, and also don't worry about it until 10k miles).
Personally, I've run Mobil 1 in my previous ride ('91 Talon TSi Turbo AWD) and now in my '03 GT changing at 10k miles with no problems at all. I put about 50k on the Talon after switching to Mobil 1 and have 16k on my GT now.
Of course, I always change the filter (also Mobil 1) when I change the oil!
