Thanks for your replies! Yes, we did get the timing belt replaced a year or so ago, so that should be good. My hub just doesn't see the sense in paying 2K for repairs on a car worth $3.5K. I don't see the sense in paying $8-10K on a used car for a beginning driver. I'll probably make the sacrifice and do the repairs, since we have one daughter who will be driving locally (she just told me yesterday that she was old enough to get her permit tomorrow - which is what sparked this question) but the other will off at college at least 3 hours away so she'll need a more dependable car. What a situation - three cars needed in the next three years for one family! BTW, we do have another car - a 2001 Dodge Dakota with only 60K miles since it only has 2 seats! But for some reason, my Hub takes my car everywhere, even when it's just him?? I guess he lives driving my car with purple flames
