That is not quite an apples-to-apples comparison: the Airaid graph is zoomed-in and does not show the whole RPM spectrum.
Neither does the K&N, the AirRaid scales seem to be more relevant.
Their product, to me, appears to lack substance. (Resellers need not reply since the higher profit-margin Airaid is a conflict of interest. "Cheaper" is not synonymous with "better value".) Getting the tables and letting Excel graph the two would be ideal.
Agreed cheaper is not synonymous with "best value" concepts. I'm completely with you on this. But the idea is to get the most bang/performance for the buck.
Comparisons to bone-stock is pretty much irrelevant:
Disagree, you need to know what if any improvements that its providing you over the stock config otherwise why would you buy it?
I would like to see a dyno of stock airbox with both silencers removed and a drop-in K&N, since it appears that is what most of us have done, at least at first. For those of us who fall into that category, the question is really about the plumbing. Would replacing the bends and the third silencer yield any gains? Since the Airaid does not do this, I would wager that the K&N drop-in sans silencers configuration would dyno identically to the Airaid.
Agreed, thats exactly my take on what's happening the removal of the silencers is why the performance is increasing. Take a look at Rice Killing Gt's Dyno run. He did a before and after with the silencers removed/Stage1 and he ended up with 200WHP like I did
My guesses to the Airaid vs. Typhoon graphs:
- Removing the silencers and using a better flowing air filter lessens the air restrictions enough to let more air in at sufficient velocities at the bottom end, but still too restrictive > ~4500 RPM
- The Typhoon lets more air in overall, however, its unrestrictive nature does not generate sufficient velocity at the low end, but is perfect for the mid-upper end.
Basically the same concept that applies to exhaust and headers, vis-a-vis 4-1 vs. 4-2-1.
Does this sound right?
