black paint scratches

I just got a new black GT Cruiser about a month ago... After a thorough cleaning the paint felt rough so I clayed it with Mothers clay from a brand new box. Followed all the instuctions and lubed the bar and the surface with lots of the included Showtime detailer. This stuff scratched the S@#$ out of my hood... Now What??????
I really don't want to start shaving (polishing)the layer of clear coat just to fix this. Is it possible that the clay just removed the dealers crappy prep job and those scratches were already there? Any suggestions would be geatly appreciated.
