Does anyone know the history of the meaning behind the Mercedes Star?

The center signifies Superiority, the three arms stand for Land/Air and Sea. Thus Mercedes claims to rule all three facets of the transportation sector of the industry. Since our Cruisers are now part of that I think we should add a forth arm to represent "Cruisers"
