Yes, you suck all sorts of bad things into your intake and into the combustion chambers which is not good.
If you like the noise, get a cold air filter like an AirRaid or a K&N.
That helps low end throttle response, pep the car up a bit, esp if its a non-turbo. If it's a turbo, your better off with the box and a drop in filter unless you go ram air.
