Unless you throw LOSTA money at it, you're not gonna be the fastest car. BUT - my first advice is to join PTDoItYourself.Net, and look at the air intakes - there are "home-made" ones. You can also look up the shift mod (wire snip) that was put up by MX-5 (a mechanic).
You WILL notice an intake mod - it won't smoke tires, but it'll help.
