Sounds cool, But I would make a copy of the shelf you have now out of 3/4" MDF wood. Have the box drop down to house your subs like you said. But what I would do to show off more of the amp it recess the amp in to the back of the box so when you open the trunk you can see the amp. Even hook up some neons to have a glow effect on the amp. You should use 3/4" MDF wood for everything. Also get liquid nail to sell the seems. Sounds like a great idea was thinking of changing mine for something similar.
