My PT pulled a float in Saturday's Brampton evening Santa Parade. We represented (and built the float for) the Brampton Canadette's Girls Hockey league.
I spent all Thurs evening, all Fri afternoon, and most Sat morning re-enforcing the sides, wiring up the lights to some electronics, attaching the generator, moving the platform around, attaching the side-skirt, safety chains, .... Finished about 3:00 Sat. The plan was to head to the inspection area for 4 (at the latest) then to the staging area (4:30 at the latest) to meet with the 20+ kids, then the parade starts at 5:00.
Even with 2 escort vehicles, the local constabulary (Peel Police) decided to pull me over about 1 mile from the inspection area (Vodden and Howden)!! He first started off by saying that my flashing lights were bad (it WAS a slow moving vehicle!!) then constantly asked "WHO INSTALLED THOSE??", then went on that I had no lights (its a FARM wagon buddy), then no tags (D'UH!! its a parade float), that I had no insurance (as long as its attached to the PT it is insured), that I was a hazard (going 20 kms/hr is not a hazard), THEN he walked around the front and complained that my HEADLIGHTS WERE BLUE!! (the Xenon bulbs appear blue when they are off)!! WHAT?? He pulls me over for the float, and complains about headlights??????
I explain to him that they appear blue due to the Xenon gas, and that they glow WHITE when on. He said that they were ILLEGAL, but the Xenon ones on "his BMW" were legal. I kindly corrected him by saying that his BMW are HID (high intensity discharge) are a different type, technology, and price!
I then start to get a little impatient reminding him that we are in the ANNUAL, SANTA PARADE, and that the inspection area is about 1 mile up the road, could he please escort us to the inspection area? His response: "I DON'T DO PARADES".
He gave me back my papers, warned me that if he ever saw me again he would ticket me (not sure what for), and left!!
We got to the inspection area LATE! We were the last ones to be inspected. Passed, then drove to the parade area.
10 kids climbed up, making the float over 1000 pounds- it was MURDER on the clutch going up-hill!! You could smell it a few times. Another 10+ kids walked the route high-5'ing the kiddies in the front rows.
We were #36, I think there were 70+ entries. Over 120,000 lined the route, the local station (Rogers chan. 10) recorded it for later play, as well as the larger Toronto stations who ran spots that night. It was a lot of fun- we got a LOT of "nice car" from the crowd, so much so that Mr. Ahooga overheated!!
Maybe next time, we'll take the van.[/color]
