I like the OEM ones. The hatch struts were replaced in 12/11 when my PT was still under an extended warranty.

They installed MOPAR 4589630AC struts and MOPAR 6509297AA Stud.

My PT now has almost 92,000 miles on those struts and they still work as good as when new, no problem holding up the rear hatch, and I use my hatch several times almost every day, so they get plenty of use.

RockAuto has a real good price on the OEM, $28.79 where most other sources are almost $44/each:

And $1.85/each for the mounting stud (you will need 4 for the initial installation):

The advantage of using the OEM type with the mounting stud is that you only have to install the stud once, if the struts need to be replaced in the future, you just pop them off the stud and snap on the new struts.

Most replacement struts you have to mount with a screw attached to the strut.

One disadvantage of this type is that you risk cross threading the mounting screw while installing the strut. Again, with the stud type, you only have to mount it once and never worry about cross threading it again.

I got mine at Autozone. Mightylift brand. They were easy to change and worked great. Make sure you prop that lift gate open with a 2x4 or something when you change them. One will not hold it up. I didn't replace the screws. I just popped the clips off the old ones and tapped the new ones in.

Basically, Yes. The more you use the hatch, the more the oil will coat everything. Probably about a week or 2 under normal use.

I used QImax, I like them, no issues.

PS: keep a 2x4 handy for installation
