I have an '05, Gold Touring Edition Cruiser. Nothing fancy, I commute w/it to work in NYC. Last month I noticed a small (really small) rust spot under the TOURING EDITION plate on the left rear hatch.
Dealer found 2 more (close by,also on the hatch)and fixed them all (no charge). Originally he said it was rusting from under the paint. When I pressed him to find the source of the problem so it could be corrected, he called back and attributed it to something called "Rail Dust"[:I]. I had never heard of it before, so he explained that sometimes while being transported by train, the train will kick up a spark and it is so hot that it melts itself into the paint. With time, it begins to rust. He says it is fixed and will not recur. Is this for real or was I given a song and dance? The car has been good, but I do not want this problem to resurface after my warranty is expired. Oh, BTW, he moved the TOURING EDITION plate down to cover the area where I had originally noticed the rust spot. Coincidence? Thanks in advance- Jack |

You need to clay your car. I had some of those when I purchased my 04 PT on the tailgate and the clay took it right off...so I decided to do the whole car...worth the time to do it...

I think it's real. I've read of the rail dust problem.
Agree with RSZappa1 - clay bar does wonders. Keep it moving, keep it wet, and don't press too hard - when the bar just glides, you're done. Then apply a good polish. (I have taken a liking top DuPont Car Polish with Teflon). [?]

Rail dust is real, and takes on the appearence of rust. claying will remove it. I have had many people call me thinking their car is rusting away and its less than 3 months old. It is best to get it off asap. To purchase clay, go to my web site www.perfectautofinish.com Gary
