Unless the dealers are different than we have here .....they just laugh, because they don't give a rats a** about the bumpers or you after you buy. I complained about mine both to the dealer and Chrysler Canada and just got the same old "we are very sorry but at this time there is nothing that will be done but thank you for buying from Chrysler"

The Chrysler code for the bumpers is XS9, Dark Charcoal Met., to be covered with a matte clear. I'm mixing up 8oz. in DeBeer 500 basecoat as I'm writing this. I'll let you all know how it comes out.

Painted the front cover yesterday. The tape marks "mapped", that is, swelled up badly. Very strange. I used gray scotchbrite with Presta scuff paste, then Transtar Multi-Tie-coat adhesion promoter, two coats of basecoat before the mapping issue arose. Sprayed Dominion Sure-seals "Sure Tex" texture coating to hide the mapping, re base coated and cleared with DeBeer 1-105 Matte Clear. It took so much texture coating to hide the mapping I'm not happy with the finish. It looks somewhere between grainy (good) and undercoating (ugh!). Time constraints prevented me from knocking down the texture coating which would have been the correct thing to do. Next weekend I'll wet sand with 400 then 600 then re-clear, unless I cut through and need to re-base. In hindsight I should have stopped, called the wife to come get me and left the car at the customers shop we borrowed and returned today.

Hey their Tinbender,
Sorry to hear about your issue their. These particular bumpers can be a real pain for sure. I do agree that its best to sand the part down to remove the texture. Just a quick guess but, I would also wonder if you might be having a compatibility issue with your current products and the OEM Mold in Color (MID) TPO Plastic compounds used in the manufacturing of the parts which subsequently created the mess in the first place. Chrysler also likes to use some type of a rubber substrate on top of their MID Plastics which can also cause issues if not 100% completely removed from the surface. I know plastics can be extremely sensitive to certain substrates big time creating all kinds of problems. ![]() Their was a Technical Service Bulletin or (TSB) from Chrysler Corporate TSB # 23-034-04 in which they were having specific issues with the curing times on the MID Plastics which were flashing too fast thus creating the original issue. The OEM Product suggestion/Repair methods through Chrysler to fix the problem is as follows: PARTS REQUIRED: Qty. Part No. Description AR NPN Scuff and Cleaner (SEM P/N 38338 or equivalent) AR NPN Plastic Prep (SEM P/N 3835 or equivalent) AR NPN Plastic Adhesion Promoter (SEM P/N 3986 or equivalent) AR NPN Bumper Coater, (SEM P/N 39273 or equivalent) NOTE: For distribution or technical information contact SEM at 800-831-1122, Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM Eastern Time or Friday 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Clean all surfaces to be top coated using mild soap and water. 2. Prep with SEM 38338 Scuff & Clean. Apply using a gray scuff pad and scrub thoroughly. Wash to remove all residue in preparation for top coat. NUMBER: 23-034-04 GROUP: Body DATE: September 10, 2004 3. Clean all surfaces to be top coated using SEM 3835 Plastic Prep. 4. Mask off adjacent areas to protect them from paint over spray. 5. Apply SEM 3986 Plastic Adhesion Promoter, allow 5 minutes to flash, apply a second full wet coat. Allow 10-15 minutes but no more than 30 minutes flash time before top coating. 6. Top coat using SEM 39273 Bumper Coater. 7. Follow application procedures on the SEM aerosol container. 8. Detail the vehicle to complete the repairs. Other than that, if you have any more issues or want to maybe bounce any thoughts or ideas off me, I would be more than happy to try to help out wherever I can. PS: For others who have this issue as well and have read on several posts around various PT Sites in reference to using WD40 to temporarily resolve the tape mark issue, Yes the oils used in the chemical composition of WD40 will effectively hide the discoloration, though you should also be very much aware that included in the chemical makeup of WD40 also contains 50% Stoddard Solvent which holds very similar composition to Kerosene, and 25% Liquified Petroleum Gas, both of which are highly flammable, and both of which when introduced to the (MID) TPO type of plastic used in the manufacturing of these Bumpers will seep directly into the plastic which can also directly cause a number of issues. For these reasons I would personally recommend not using this method to perform this type of repair.

I am thinking of trying,, wipe down the rear bumper with laquer thinner several times to remove any wax, oils etc. Use an alcohol based dye over the bumper to even out the color.. ???
