When I first bought her she was so sexy, shiny black that I was inspired to "do the right thing" and purchased all the materials I'd need to DIY. I was determined to hand wash only! But 6 hours into the first hand-wash, reality set in and I was forced to admit that as much as I would love to do it, I do not have that kind of time.

Sooo, about once a week I take her through a local "soft wash system" and do a dry and polish after.

Twice a year I will splurge on a pro detail. He does a very thorough job (last time was 8 hours), lots of claying and buffing and waxing and also takes care of any paint chips I may have acquired.

No swirls yet (knock on wood) and she's still as sexy and shiny as ever!

My wife purchased her PT used a few years ago, so we're not sure if the previous owner (well leasee) ran it through automatic car washes.

Anyway, she ran it through one about 2 years ago at a local car wash and when she brought it home it looked like someone scrubbed it with a brush. 8 hours of polishing and cutting later, it looked good again. But I was extremely tired. So that was the last time she did that, but sometimes I think she sneaks it through one from time to time.

On my car and truck, I've never put them through one. I refuse! I wash and wax by my own hand.

I think of it this way... An automatic car wash is like a hooker; do you really want to stick yours in next?

I use it and only go to one and thats because its brushless/clothless and i get to use it for free.

it has med pressure and get about 85% of the stuff off and then i just pull out and wipe off the leftover drops.

other then that i just go to the quarter wash you gotta love those 25cents to start. usually cost me about 50 cents to wash one car.

I bought my PT used, and while it has a couple of chips on the front and rear bumpers, it's in great shape. I have no idea what the previous owner did, but I don't like to use either the DIY car wash places, or the local full-service hand-wash one that everyone in town uses. I put mine in my driveway and hand wash it myself.

I live in an apartment complex, they do not allow you to wash your vehicle on their property. Neither do I have family within 90 miles or any place else I can wash a vehicle myself, so yes I use the automatic ones. So far the only thing I've lost was due to my stupidity. I have a magnetic antenna on the roof. Otherwise I've not noticed any damage of any type. Also, they don't use rotating brushes on the top, but instead cloths that sway back and forth as your car moves under them.

One thing I like in the winter is that they offer an under body wash. How many of you hand car washers that live in the snow belts get all of the salt and grime off the underside of your Cruiser?

I pretty much thought the open bay type that you drive into to wash your car are all over the country. Take your bucket and sponge with you and it is just like at home.
