Chances are that since you have a black car, if you look, you'll have swirls all over your car, not just in one spot. For most people, especially ones with dark paint, swirls are just part of the car. While it's not impossible to remove them, it is hard for someone that hasn't done it before. And yes, it can be done by hand, but it's a ton of work.

If this is something you want to tackle, go to Wal-Mart get some of Meguiar's new Ultimate Compound or SwirlX. Both products can be used hand, but you'll have to use a lot of "passion" to get the swirls out by hand, but again, it can be done. It'll just take a while, especially if you decide to do the whole car.

Before you try to remove the swirls, wash and clay your car. Then use the compound and if you really want your black to shine, get some of Meguiar's Show Car Glaze and use after the compound. Then make sure you apply two good coats of wax. If you're not sure how to properly do this just read some of Candyman's posts, there's a lot of useful info there.

This is a full day's work and it can get expensive to accumulate the right products to accomplish a swirl-free finish, so you might want to look in to someone doing it for you. Just make sure they know what they're doing. Another thing to consider is if you don't wash your car yourself using proper techniques, the swirls are just going to reappear. Especially if you go to automatic car washes. Not only will these places instill swirls, but most use harsh enough chemicals that there's a good chance your wax will be removed.

I hope this helps in your decision! Keep us updated, and if you can, take some good before and after pictures.

29 Years in the AF here!
Assighnments all around - two near Panama City and Ft. Walton Beach.
This stretch is by far the most beautiful beaches I have seen; except when the jellyfish come in!

I am in Destin- between Fort Walton and Panama City- Awesome beaches!!! Worth the trip as I see and meet TONS of people that come vacation here- in fact in the summer it is hard to meet locals, but

back to the topic- You dont need a machine to do you car, however it makes life much easier and tends to get all of your product into the swirls with 1/8 the effort of hand polishing. I personally do not like any meguires products and have been detailing for 16 years now- trust in a professional product and even if applied with a cheapo $30-40 orbital buffer you will reap HUGE benefits over any product you can buy at wal mart or auto parts stores. If you wanna go the cheap route- then at least go for the spider web glaze I mentioned in the other post and follow that with the OTC products applied with a cheap orbital with fresh pads every coat.

Cheap route I would (after wash and clay)
1. get a cheap orbital buffer that does no more than 1500-3000 rpms
2. buy one pro product to start- spider web glaze polish
3. OTC cleaner wax or polish of some sort- 3m or Mothers if wal mart
4. final coat immediately after #1-3 with pure carnuba- a decent cheap OTC wax that is EZ on/off is KIT WAX in yellow bottle.
and you will achieve very close to a professional job-

My Cruiser had swirls on the hood and trunk so this weekend since the weather was finally nice I gave it a good cleaning

1. I gave my Cruiser a good washing
2. I clayed the hood and trunk
2. I used Mequairs cleaner polishing wax
3. Then I used my favorite car wax its made from a company called IBiz
4. Last I used Meguairs Ultimate Quik Detailer

I did this all by hand, came out pretty good too cant see the swirls, they were really bad before. Below is an photo I took of my hood, the shine is awesome

Hey their digitalpinscruiser,

Looking really good, and that is a great example of how you can remove swirls by hand!

Well today Friday and yesterday was the first nice days we had here in a long time in NYC and it was near 80 yesterday. So Friday I took off work and clean the interior of my cruiser for a couple of hours and then yesterday I spent a good 3-4 hours cleaning and waxing my cruiser with my dad. Here are some pics..

Anyone who sends me to a dealer to have swirls removed need to explain that more, since dealers are the ones that install swirl marks about %100 of the time..

I think I will stick with my DA and Mequiars product.. dieselfumes1983;251847 you have no clue that they make a full line of pro stuff that most OEM makers use.

I will not start a flame war here but you are seriously misinformed. Your advice will do nothing more than hide swirl marks since polish will fill them in. You can't honestly correct swirls with a cheapy buffer..
