Sorry guys, I was hired to put together a business plan for a guy starting a detailing business. It is taking be more time than I thought. Ok, dressings. First of all, I used the Meguiars Endurance and it is solvent based. (My rep sent me a sample) You can tell a solvent based product becuase it looks and feels like gel, it is sticky (the petroleum in it/ and mineral spirits) when I called the rep and asked what type it was (just wanted to test his knowledge) he didn't even know. Here is my take on solvent dressings. It destroys rubber bottom line. Yes it gives a shiny look but to me that is unnatural anyway. besides the fact is it harmful to rubber. The only reason it was introduced is because the public wanted it. without obtaining proper education. I added a water based dressing because I wanted poeple to have a choice, most people don't even know about dressings. another thing is when solvent dressings get on your finish, guess what happens? not only it is hard to remove, it also takes off your protection you worked so hard on applying. Most of the meguiars line of products you can get at walmart are made for retail, much differant than their pro line of stuff. (watch out for the red bottles) I use many of their products in their pro line (compounds, polish etc) but again, you have to know what to look for. thats where I come in with the education part. Hope that helps. Gary

Also, can anyone comment on this? "I have seen what the oil based stuff does to tires and Gary seems to be the only guy who sells a water based product. I guess the big companies are not quite as up-to-speed as Gary. " What exactly is it the oil based stuff "does to tires" and does anyone have pictures of what it does? I have been using tire shine products for a few years now, and have tried everything from foam to spray to gel and I have yet to see any damage to the walls of my tires. Would manufacturers really sell this kind of product if it damaged tires? Surely by now there would have been a loud outcry at the least - and more likely a class action lawsuit for damage to tires? Is this proveable or just another "I heard this" type story?

Andy, thanks for your comments, good point. It seems the younger generation is what started the demand for "High Gloss" on tires. Yes it has been proven to have a damaging effect, and I have done a simple experiment myself. First understand what solvent is/ it is petroleum distillates. (solvent) It is what most professionals use to remove Tar/oil. Reason is because it breaks tar/oil down chemically. I was told by one of my peers to try this, I took a small piece of rubber, let it soak with a solvent dressing overnight. The next day I took the rubber out, and it was breaking down, soft, mushy, and the container was black from the dye in the rubber. Reason you may not notice it, is also simple, when applied to your tires, 85% of it flings off the car or evaperates. it is easy to spot a solvent dressing when you touch/feel it, its sticky, and greasy. Imagion the effect on your finish as well. I'm not the only person smart enough to use and or sell a water based dressing. Most professional chemical companies offer both. Who buys the solvent dressing? one market is car dealers (huge market) they want something that will give a high shine. also uneducated buyers, or people that just "like the look". If you have any more questions just ask/ Gary

Griot's Garage (http://www.griotsgarage.com) "Vinyl and Rubber Dressing" is water-based and leaves a satin finish rather than high-gloss finish. It does not leave a greasy, dust-attracting residue either. I use it on my engine bay and weatherstripping. Personally, I prefer the high-gloss shine on the tires with chrome wheels. I have been using the Meguiar's spray stuff but it is messy to apply.
Cruisin2k pointed out the Meguiar's gel to me at Pep Boys and I picked up a bottle. I have not used it on the tires yet (I actually have the Griot's on the tires now--I did not want to deal with the spray mess at the time). I just put some of the gel on the dull-matte black intake hose elbows today and now I am questioning that manoeuvre. |

bobs turbo pt, yep tried it last weekend, worked great. It produced a nice shine with kind of a satin finish, I really like it, looks very natural. I'm going to try Gary's tire dressing today, the last time I used his I did not put it on correctly. For now, the Stoner's is the best I've used.
This forum is a great place and there are a lot of great people here. I want to publicly thank bobs turbo pt for his kindness. Bob sent me a can of Stoner's Tire Dressing to try out. He only asked for $5.00 to cover shipping (which was actually a little more) and sent me a brand new can of the tire dressing. Thanks Bob, that was very kind of you![^]

I use the REEVE'S DRESS ALL from my Chrysler dealer. I had to have some body work done on the wife's LHS a few years ago and they used it on the tires, leather seats, and dash. I was impressed so I asked if they sold it. Went to the parts department and they sold it by the gallon. It cost about $20 back then, (about 6 or 7 years ago). It's water based, goes on easy. You can put some on a rag and just wipe it on, or use a paint brush and brush it on. The latter method is best for a higher sheen. It takes VERY little, and if you get some on the wheels, you can wipe it right off with a damp cloth. I gave some of it to my son and son-in-law and still have almost a half gallon left. Like I mentioned, you can also use it anywhere you want a high sheen, any vinyl or leather, of course you'd use a cloth for applying anywhere except the wheels. Anyway, just thought I'd mention this stuff because I like it real well and it's available where you bought your Cruiser.
