Apologies if this is a thread that has been covered in the past, but I was wondering about the California Dusters. If they retain the dust as they claim, would that end up scratching the surface over time? Clearcoats seem to get swirl marks so easily as it is, so would running old dust & grime over your surface exacerbate this problem. That said, I did see someone using one for a final prep for a car show on one of the programs on Discover or The Learning Channel. Thier finish would probably be different though. So what are your collective opinions? TIA

The duster's threads are coated in a wax. Which is why they say to only use it on a cool vehicle. Until it's "cured" it will leave a couple wax streaks on the finish but they wipe right off. I haven't seen any damage to my finish from mine. The wax helps it hold the dust and you shake the hell outta the thing periodically to release what it's collected. You don't actually put pressure against the car with it, instead you're just letting it slide over the car. The key thing to remember is it's a duster not a cleaner. It's not intended for polishing your ride after a day of driving. Rather, knocking off the dust that's settled overnight while it was parked.

I was given one just after buying my Stratus back in 2000 and never had a problem with it harming the paint. I've used it quite a bit on the PT because the darker color shows the dust more readily (plus California just seems to be dusty in general - must be the desert being so close by!!) and I haven't noticed anything negative. I probably use it once a week and keep it in its little protective pack the rest of the time.

Works great on my new black Touring. The trick is, as stated, not to use pressure and to shake it out. I use mine every morning and have not seen swirl marks. I have a three sided car port, and the dust really collects on the back of the car.

I have been using the California duster for almost four years on my Cruisers, it is great.

I use mine every day.In the morning before I go to work.
It seems to do two things. First my car looks good and second if it happens to rain a light shower. It doesn't seemto look as dirty when it dries.

The key word here is "DUSTER". Light dusting, no pressure should be applied what so ever. If you have smudge marks, finger prints and such, use quick detail spray and a MF towel.
