Stoopid noob question here. What is the purpose for using clay while detailing a car? I've never used it but i have seen it in stores.

A claybar safely removes embedded particles from your paint that cannot be removed with other methods (polishing, buffing, etc). Even though you may have a new car, rail dust, contaminants, brake dust, etc. may be embedded into your paint from the shipping/delivery process or even from a test drive and a claybar will remove them safely from your paint. Normally you would claybar your car at least once a year, more often if you live in a heavily industrial area.
There are basically 2 types of clay bars available, one is the normal consumer version or fine grade (non-abrasive) and is safe to use without scratching your paint. The other grade is for paint overspray (medium grade) and is very aggressive, and even abrasive, and I don't recommend its use for beginners.
Can read this article for some good tips on claying your car:

If you overlook the obvious hard sell in the below video (real player) you can see that using a claybar only requires you to lube the area (with the supplied lube or car wash mix) and gently glide the clay bar over your paint to remove any contaminents, not hard rubbing or undue pressure of any kind. If the clay bar sticks, then you are not using enough lube on the area or pressing down too hard.:
