Smile Cruise control problem

Hi and good morning.
My cruise has started to give me a little grief.
Sometimes when I turn on, it turns itself off after about 2 seconds.
Other times it stays on and works for a while, then turns off.
On both occasions, it will not turn back on until the key has been taken out and car restarted.

Thanks in anticipation guys, Kev

That's an unusual problem that I have never heard of before this. Is anything else acting up in any way at all? Sometimes a low battery can cause strange little electronic gremlins to show up. Almost everything is controled by the PCM on these cars so I hope it's not a problem there. You could try disconnecting the battery and drianing the power reserve by keeping the door/dome light on and holding the brake pedal down to trip the brake lights. This causes a "poorman's" reset of the PCM and sometimes fixes little hic-ups in the electronics. At least it's free to try and the only down side is you will have to reprogram your radio stations and clock.

Good luck and keep Cruisin'

I have now bought a donor car with working cruise. Could someone tell me exactly which bits to change over. Thanks.

I did disconnect the battery for a couple of hours, but no difference

Cheers

You can learn a lot with your donor car. You may as well replace everything short of the wiring harnesses.
Replace the cruise vacuum actuator and the control cable to the throttle.
Under the right front fender well is a black plastic box, the vacuum reservoir. Replace it.
Replace all of the vacuum tubing and fittings.

Inside the car, remove the steering wheel--CAUTION, airbag alert. This is at your risk. Replace the cruise controls stalk.

Check all connectors between the actuator connector and the multifunction and cruise switches. Repair or replace any bad wiring, connectors.
This may or may not also include wiring and switches for brake, (clutch), transmission, throttle position sensor, speed sensor, MAP, fuse boxes.

What else? Computer? Wiring harness?

This is do-able but there are a LOT of details and parts to switch over, under the hood and at the steering wheel. A repair manual would be a minimum requirement, at least for me.
