Default Anyone changed a 2.2 diesel alternator?

My alternator has started screeching and making a horrible metallic grinding noise. After disconnecting the auxcillary belt and isolating the alternator it would appear hat the clutch mechanism in it is shot to bits... So need to replace.

Being a euro 2.2 crd, not much around to tell you the process however after some research, it appears that you gave to basically strip the front end of the car including both water and ac radiators (which would mean needing a complete regas for the ac system!) and removing the front main cross member, just to be able to get to the bolts! Seems a bit extreme!

Has anyone done one if these? Can the radiators be leaned forward enough to get the alternator out without. Having the completely disconnect them.?

Any past experiences greatly welcome, although I realise the majority of you are US based petrol owners.

Thanks off your help,
Toby

Hello,

I currently have 2.2 diesel in the UK which has the same problem. I took the alternator off and the pulley fell into pieces.

To remove the alternator the slam panel was removed, along with the radiator (the previous owner had removed the aircon rad for some reason so I thought I'd take the rad off as someone had sprayed it blue ?). Take the top left engine mount (putting a jack underneath the left side of the engine) and jack up the engine in order to remove the bolts.

Not a very difficult job. I specialise in PT Cruisers in the UK so send me an email if you get stuck, info@rsmotorworks.co.uk

You can do it by removing the slam panel.
The rads can be pulled forward and held.
But you will need to remove the inlet manifold
Don't forget to order new seals and you may as we'll replace the short turbo hose as it needs to come off,
That's how I done the last one.

Each to their own but I have done it with the manifold on, turbo hose on.

Half way through...
Managed to get the old one out, leaving the rads in place but removing the manifold. Didn't want have to pay out for regas so improvised. Nightmare to get to certain bolts. Have photographed the process so will make a how to post once finished, just in case someone else needs the help
Air manifold was full of muck so needed removing anyway.

Did this get sorted? My 2.2 diesel had a noisy alternator and now the battery light has come on. There's almost no info out there on this model!

Lankytim, I'd suggest sending rsmotorworks a pm. He seems to be willing to help and it sounds like his method works. We're not familiar with the CRD over here in the States as the bastards here never offered it to us. I'd love to have one, just to learn about diesel engines.

noisy alternator .it would be easier to change pulley in situ with the headlight removed.will need a 17mm star torx for pulley.
