I think the LED's that I ordered are supposed to be day-visible, and with the edge of the LED's hitting the outside edge of the mirror, it should be visible from the side and behind. There's also 24 LED's on each strip, and they are supposed to be higher brightness than the aftermarket mirrors I bought. I think it's an important safety feature, and should be on every vehicle. I want to make sure the guy in the next lane knows that I plan to change lanes.
From riding a motorcycle, I've learned that you have to make yourself visible to other drivers, as much as possible to prevent accidents, and stupid mistakes. If these ones work out, I'll post up a tutorial on it so others can do the mod too.

Signal Mirrors use high-intensity LED lamps to turn ordinary exterior rearview mirrors into safety features that command attention. When a turn signal is activated, a flashing chevron appears in the corresponding side mirror to alert drivers in the blind spot of your intentions.

The thing is, yes you can get/use the chevron type units if you can find some that will fit the PTs mirror glass. You can also have a type that is built into the mirror housing or a type where the flashers sit on the outside of the housing. Look around, there are a lot of these different systems on cars now and some seem to be much better than others. My choice would be a small flasher that goes onto the bottom of our mirror housings that can be seen from both the frunt and the rear of the car. Some new Ford pickups have this type.
I did buy a set of new signal mirrors over a year ago. I mounted one of them and it works but not very good. The second one I used for parts and cut a nice hole in my PT mirror and installed the lights in it and it works but not very good. OK at night but not during the day time. There must be a better way to do this. The other thing you can do is what some VWs have, a small flasher mounted just forward of the frunt door (mounted on or into the finder)? That should work.
