Welcome to the forum Yes, the area where the 3M tape will be adhering to should be clean and free from oil, grime and wax. There's products you can pick up at any auto store that will work well.

This is from a web site:

Choosing cleaning solution

As you may know, high quality adhesives are designed to create an excellent bond on clean, smooth, weather resistant surfaces that are free of grease, wax, and also silicone. In order to achieve a long lasting bond however; the surfaces must be thoroughly prepared.

A majority of experts recommend using isopropyl alcohol on the surface then wiping it with a clean cloth.

3M makes an Adhesion Promoter, that when applied after surface cleaning, will make that 3M tape stick way better.

Thumbs up Re: installing chrome items

3 M Adhesion Promoter!!!
The individual blister packs are way too expensive in the box of 20.....$35 and up! Buying individual ones is likely to result in waste....not enough.....or too much for the job.
Get the adhesion promoter PEN! It's like a magic marker....lots of fluid...easy to use, and neat..not sloppy! And the price is right!

Wink Re: installing chrome items

Searched the web; wound up at Amazon.com > automotive > search for "adhesion promoter"....
The actual shipper was "kaylonmotorsports". Paid $14.98 for my pen.
Amazon.com: adhesion promoter: Automotive
