You must be from California.
I sure am. Fortunately, BTW, we do not have to worry about inspection stations in California, only police officers with nothing better to do than look at tail lights.

The point is simple: If a company sells illegal products, they should be responsible for all the problems caused by that product. There was no way for the consumers who bought the first generation of APC lights for the PT Cruiser to know that they were illegal since APC had imprinted fake DOT numbers on them. APC knew that the numbers they put on their lights were fake, so they should pay.

Is the second generation of APC Euro Taillights of any better quality? Also, they are advertised as "street legal". Are these "improved" lights any good at all or should one not even consider them for purchase? Thanks.

There is some question as to the legality of the Generation II APC tail lights. They do not have all the side visibility required by DOT guidelines. In California, since they were sold on PT Cruiser special California Cruiser editions, they should be legal. Any lights installed on new vehicles are "automatically" legal. It is interesting to note, however, that most of the dealers selling these modified Cruisers also included the stock lights in the back. I'm not sure about their legality in any other states. The Generation III tail lights are DOT approved for sure. It took three tries for APC to get it right.
