Question LED bulbs... Need CANBUS?

I'm looking to install LED bulbs in various locations in my '06 Cruiser, but I have a sneaky suspicion that these need to be "CANBUS" compatible or they won't work.

I've tried to swap my dome lights and brake bulbs, but they would not light unless I put a regular bulb into the circuit in parallel to the LED bulb.

The odd part is that the LEDs would not light at all, installed in either direction, until I jumpered the old bulb across the socket as well - then both bulbs lit up.

I also had no luck putting LEDs into my tail lights... No light either way, but the original bulb works fine.

I'm hoping to do a bit more work this weekend and will try some other bulbs.

Thanks!

Huh thats odd. I have replaced my dome lights, 3rd brake lights, tail lights, and my old back up lights with LEDs. Besides resistance issues I have never had one flat out not work unless it was dead.

I did eventually put the LEDs in and leave them... They seem to be working now.

When you push the button to make the light come on, should the light always work, or does the car automatically shut them off to save the battery?

The lights work fine for the doors, and when the car is running. If I am just in the car without a key in the ignition, the map lights don't work. I don't remember it acting like this with regular bulbs, but I could be wrong.
