Default What to do about grille

I'm on my third grille on my 2005 touring - am using chrome colored plastic strips - they last about two years and then the clear coat starts to peel off and they get faded. The current grille was installed April, 2010 with a cost of about 45.00 and about 45 minutes of measuring, cutting and getting them straight.

Here's a closeup picture - taken a couple of days ago:

Is there anything I can do to extend the life of the grille? And am I being too picky?

I have the same measure/cut/stick grill and it's been on a couple years without damage or peeling. I do clean and wipe down the whole car pretty often and the only thing I have to be careful of is the love-bugs (hazard of Florida living) that come around twice a year. I make sure they are cleaned off every time I take the car out. You can try putting a lite coat of wax on the strips. Maybe that will help.

Thanks. I try to keep it waxed, but the Missouri winter is tough on those strips. I've been advised to look for a billet grille, but haven't seen one that really speaks to me - but that's part of the fun, isn't it?

BTW, I really like the pinstriping on your Cruiser - wish I could find a pinstriper here in the Ozarks. Perhaps in Kansas City one of these days.

I wonder if that headlight sealer spray stuff might protect the finish?

I wondered about that, too; especially since I just used it on my headlights - and my taillights. I've got most of the bottle left - may give it a try.

I might have bought that myself if there was a bottom piece.

As easy as our grills come off (4 screws and lift out), why not get another grill and use for winter. Then when good weather rolls around put your chrome one back in?

Ebay has them fairly cheap all the time to, so not a big expense

Cool Re: What to do about grille

I doubt that waxing the chrome coated plastic stips will do much.
That thin veneer can just plain deteriorate - unlike real chrome.

**OK you detail gear heads....can he just simly peel that strip off and apply a new chrome coated plastic strip overlay?
(They are available from many parts resources)
