Thumbs up Re: Continental Tire Kit for Subdued Elegance

The Conti kits ARE a great touch for that retro look!

This is my 49 Plymouth woodie. Is this is where the continental idea came from?

The term Continental kit for hard covered rear mounted spare tires between deck and extended bumper originated with the introduction of the Lincoln Continental in 1940. The aftermarket was selling "Continental Kits" for almost all makes in the early 50s, and factory authorized kits were available for many popular new cars too, before the Continental Mark II came out with the stylized bump in the trunk which was carried through on many Lincoln Mark models and even hinted at on Lincoln cars today.
That is the history lesson.

The crested hubcap shown in the post above is a 50s Oldsmobile cap.
Chrysler did make some crested caps in the 50s but prior to that most just had Chrysler script on them.

I will make no comment on the rear tire deck add-ons, rear window covers, sun visors, or 39 Ford taillamp covers for taillamps.
The Cruiser is styled after 37-area cars which had moved the spares to the trunk already.

I am tempted to to buy another cruiser and make several mods to it, early era-wise, those being using perhaps my pair of 39 Plymouth taillamps and modifying the front fenders to use single round bulb headlamps perhaps like
40 Chevrolets sunken into the fender. I've been playing with drawings showing these front and rear changes as well as Briz seven rib aluminum 37 DeSoto bumpers front and rear, either or both.

Fact is, these little cars are pretty nice as is and given modern car Federal demands Chrysler did a pretty good job with what they had to work with.
