Solid colored tailights

Has anyone had success making solid red taillights like these

I know you are supposed to use transparent paint with a clear coat finish, but that is as far as I've gotten. Is there a need to have bulbs changed, or are there DOT (California) issues with these also. Thanks for the info!

I haven't done it YET (I bought some extra taillights really cheap to give it a shot). You use stained glass paint (that you buy in a craft store) and clearcoat over that. No need to change the bulbs. As far as DOT issues - there SHOULDN'T be any as many cars come with all red taillights from the manufacturer. If you don't want to do it yourself - do a search for D.I. Taillights. He does a real nice job. If you WANT to do it yourself and need complete instructions go to ptdiy's site.

ive had it done for some time now. used wet emery cloth to remove the orange peel finish and they look great. nex im going to cut them open and install led clusters.

Did the same to backup lights? Does that limit their usefulness?[:I]
