Default Which Double Sided Tape To Use?

Hi everyone,

I am getting ready to mount a light weight, plastic, rear deflector on my PT, like the one in the picture:

I need to use double sided tape to mount it. I see that it was previously mounted with 1" double sided tape, but I'm not sure which one. I'd like to use the appropriate product for the job. Is this 3M tape a good choice? If not, what do you suggest? Thank you!

I just found this on the AutoZone site.
It was listed under "molding tape" as opposed to double sided tape, which is why I didn't find it initially.

Best choice, I assume?

Make sure both surfaces are completely clean - I like to wipe with rubbing alcohol.

I definitely will do. Thanks!

I'm also concerned/wondering how to attach it to the car and make sure it's straight and centered once the backing tape is peeled off.

I will mark center on the hatch, and center on the deflector, following the top and side edges of the hatch as a guide. But, it's a large piece that will be easiest to install with 2 people. How best to install and get it straight the first time?

Any tips?

Use green (flexible) masking tape to outline exactly where you will attach the new body part.
The first 3m would be my choice having used it for many projects.

For advanced installers we use 3M adhesive primer before applying the body part.

You should look on 3m website for good information how to install a part using their tape or we may here about a UFO later found to be a PT cruiser spoiler that was flying in the air around your town before resting in some cow field.

Thank you for the tips and for the tape recommendation.

I like the green tape trick. I usually use a grease pencil as another method.
The good news is that the top edge and side edges of the back hatch are the mounting guides for this part, so that should make it even easier.

The biggest question I have is how to apply such a big part that has tape on it, so as to put it on right on the first shot. I would guess you can not remove it and reposition it if you mess up. Watching the 3M site for tips is a great suggestion. Thanks! Any personal experience tips are also welcome.

I'd like to leave our cow fields free of rear spoilers. HAHAHA!

do you use these a lot? i use them daily. i have noticed that 5-6 years ago they changed the formula for the white stabilos and now they (very lightly)scratch paint. drives me nuts. grumble.

i like 3M tapes but switched a few years back to Duraco because they have a warehouse bigger than a super walmart just a few blocks from me. i get 0.045" x 0.5" x 108ft rolls at $45, vs $90+ for 3M from my suppliers.
free samples: http://www.essentraspecialtytapes.co...igh-Bond-Rolls i think they send you a variety. i have samples from .015' to .5" thick from them which come in handy from time to time. check it out.

if you're referring to some type of application fluid i only use that for window tinting. i imagine the common soap/water/alcohol people use for vinyl could possibly have an effect on the adhesive over time. maybe I'm paranoid

i do use RM 900 Pre-Kleano on everything car related that i stick stuff too

I used grease pencils a lot more a few years back when I was building motorcycles, welding and making parts more frequently. The ones I'm using now are left overs from several years ago so I really can't comment on any change.

I've saved the website for Duraco. Thanks!
