Default painting bumper thoughts?

Just toying with the idea. It's an '01 Cruiser with the dark gray bumpers. I really like the factory dark gray, but they've weathered over time. I've used the Meguiars Gold Class Trim Detailer for many years and it's, ah, OK, just doesn't seem to last. I've got to thinking about painting them, the same dark gray. Anybody with experience or ideas?

I like the dark gray bumpers on the Gen1, I like how it contrasts with the body color and makes the bumpers stand out, vs having them the same as the body color

If you took the bumper skin off and found a local body shop, they would probably do it for pretty cheap if the skin was off your car.

Just my opinion or IMHO, but the black bumpers to me always looked unfinished. Painted body color looks like production finish and what has been the majority color production on most all cars even from 2000 when PT cruisers first came available.

Never the less it is all what you want and everything else is personal opinion. Just remember what you think is what matters first.

Agree!
Even my gen 1 Crusiers (3) have all been body color.

Finally got around to painting the bumpers. I pretty much followed the CREWZIN / Chris15 guide at the start of the Exterior Accessories Forum. I should have looked there first, my bad.

Before was the typical faded gray, chalky, tape-marked bumpers. It made the car look old.

I removed the front grille, it somewhat masks the top center of the bumper. It's not hard, remove the four bolts on top, press down a little, rock the grille forward and lift off.

On the rear, I removed the backup lights, license light, license plate and frame. I wrapped the bulbs in a plastic bag and stuffed some paper towels in the reverse light holes to protect from over-spray. That 100,00 mile club frame did not hold up well, it's not going back on.

As the CREWZIN / Chris15 thread stated, masking is the tedious, time consuming part. Lots of little 1"-2" pieces on the ends and lots of 4"-6" pieces on the straighter sections.

I used the Dupli-Color TB102 Dark Charcoal. It seems to match the original color but has a smoother finish. One can covered both bumpers, but only just (2 coats). I would have liked to apply a third coat, considering the effort, if I did it again, I would have a second can on-hand. One can of the CP199 Adhesion Promoter is more than enough. The final results were well worth it. Nice and fresh!

It's a good morning or afternoon project. I left the 100,000 mile club licence plate frame off, a shame, but it didn't age well.

Cool Re: painting bumper thoughts?

Looks great!

I have had the paint for a couple years now, just haven't got to that project yet! I think I have the black.

On my 2001 PT Limited, I did the bumper in black to match my black spoiler. It really made the car look more butch. I actually rolled on the base coat with a foam roller and then applied high gloss clear with rattle cans.

PT's already resemble bumper cars in a lot of ways. So we might as well embrace the look and go with it.
