Default grille question.....

being a newbie here I apoligize for this
repeat question....I picked up an E&G
horizontzal billet grille on ebay and
the instructions say to paint the so
called backdrop or the old grille for
the lower piece....I know I seen somewhere
here where someone stated they used black
duct tape or just black tape instead of
painting.....I was wondering how this
turned out with the tape.....

thanks......

Depends on how fussy you are. I did black duct tape on the top, nothing on the bottom. My reasoning is/was if I don't like it, I can always paint later - the grille takes a minute to put on or take off.
I don't think the bottom cries out for painting - it's below the bumper. If you go with tape, the tape is easy to take off if you don't like it.
MY $.02.

I thought that when you replace the grill the entire stock top grill is removed....so why the black paint on the top...The bottom I can see why because you are simply putting the billet grill over the stock one....also has anybody installed the chrome overlays that you can purchase that fit over the stock grill...How have they held up also are each strip installed seperately or is the chrome strips connected and then stuck on the old grill....

Behind the stock grill there is bodywork that shows thru in body color - that's what you want to cover.

There are both kinds - one piece overlay, and strips. Only complaint I heard with strips is "clouding" on cut ends after time - recommendation is to seal ends with clear nail polish.

BTW - here's a one-piece overlay:

The black duct tape worked great!
And you do have to put some on top
also around the trim area so it doesn't
show when the grille is installed....

Thanks for the replys......

I put the chrome overlays on my wifes Cruiser. It's been about a year
and they still look good. The problem I had was the clips that hold them on are small and one broke off.I put a small screw in it and problem solved

If you see the paint color of your car when you position the top and bottom sections of the E & G grille then that is where you should use black paint or black duct tape. Duct tape worked fine for me--can't see any Seamist Green in the darkened grille areas. [8D]
