It took me 4 months to decide on a flame design! I knew I would be doing the airbrush(No room for mistakes!!) and I didn't want decals!! I decided on a tribal flame design and went with a metalflake blue and silver. It fades from the pearl blue on the bumper to metalflake blue to metalflake silver

Hey Billster, you said you did the airbrush? Good job! I airbrush as well, but not cars, YET... would like to.

In the future, I would like to replace my decal factory flames with paint, using the exact same pattern/color. Regardless of whether I do it myself, or if I have it professionally done, can the flames be put right on the existing body color, and "spot" clear coated in the area of the flames, or would the whole car need a new clear coat, even if the flames occur only at the front/sides of the car? Is that your original body color beneath those flames? I guess what I'm asking is what did YOU do?

Well, it's a 4 month story but I'll break it down for you. I surfed the web at Car,airbrush and graphics sites for like 2 months before I decided on a design scheme stripes, character graphics(silver surfer) Flames traditional or tribal.Went with Tribal, mainly because of the hatch graphic, Tribal flames. THEN color was the issue, what goes with electric Pearl blue? Looked at a LOT of colors and decided on a metalflake blue and metalflake silver. I wanted it to have a "fade effect" from the pearl blue to mtlflk blue blended to the mtlflk silver tips!!
First drew out the design then with 1/8 pinstriping tape laid it out- 1/2 the hood and 1 side then used layout paper and a punch roller to trace my lines then applied the paper to the other side and with chalk line chalk marked and then taped that side(matches) after painting you can clear just the design, retape about 1/8" outside the design. bad side is it will leave a line. myself I cleared only the panels I painted
