Default Functional hood scoops vs air intakes

Have a general question regarding functional hood scoops a la WRX ype scoops, or our Good Hood series hoods...what happens when it rains? If you're using a functional ram-air setup w/stock air box setup (like Keystone and Airaid), wouldn't you just be funneling all the water right into the air box? [:0]

Or if you have an aftermarket intake "tube" with a front-facing hood scoop...why wouldn't the rain get sucked right into the filter element when you're flyin' around town?

Isn't water in the motor a ~bad~ thing? [:I]

With respect to the WRX, I believe their scoop simply routes air to the intercooler (mounted on top of the engine instead of in front, like our Cruisers). That air is NOT the air intake for the engine, so no worry about getting rain into the engine/compartment. Therefore, it is no different from getting our intercoolers wet (I would bet their intercooler is sealed pretty tight to the hood & there is some sort of a drain passage for the WRX cooler in case of heavy rain also).

Otherwise, I am guessing that functional hood scoops that allow air in directly would also let in the water. And although you can usually get away with it, it also raises the risk of shorting wires, cracking hot exhausts/heads/etc. and getting a good deal of grime stuck in there also.

In the old days (ala my Road Runner), there was a lever to open & close the "Air Grabber" hood scoop for dry or wet days. . .

Unless you're driving in a monsoon I wouldn't be overly concerned. I've driven through a fair number of rainy days and never had a problem. I've checked for pooling in the box and it's always been bone dry.

I have a keystone single scoop with the Airraid open airbox. Driven through some impressive rain, with no water in the box or engine. The single scoops tunnel takes a 90 degree bend and has two small water drain ports. Only time I get anything from those is after I wash my car. Otherwise it stays dry. I am pretty sure the dual scoop routes air fairly similarly.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't see from the pictures of the Keystone hoods that they had drainage holes at the bends. That would certainly alleviate any concerns with flooding.

As far as the WRX scoops being functionally different than the PT's, I could only imaggine then, that if someone were to have a frontward-facing functional scoop on the PT, and also a tube intake (with the cone filter on top of the motor i/o in the fenderwell)then ~that~ would be opening the door to some trouble.

Thanks again!

Here's a underhood pic. The channel cuts to the right (if you're looking at it) and goes over the airbox. The two drainholes are at the base just before the bend.

About how much does a hood like that cost, and where did you get it from. I had one on my old PT, but the dealer put it on before i got it. Thanks in advance.

There are such things as intake bypass vents that can be put inline between the cone filter and the TB (or Turbo, in our case) that sense when too much moisture has entered the filter and stops the air from the intake and sucks air from under the hood. Not exactly sure how they work, as I've never seen one in action, but I know that AEM manufactures one, I'm sure others make them as well. Here's a link to one:

Was considering one of these for a cold air system I never built for my 1992 LeBaron Droptop....

How come "The People" in the First Amendment means The People; "the People" in the Fourth Amendment means The People; but "the People" in the Second Amendment (ratified in 1791) means the National Guard (created by an Act of Congress in 1903)?

Anywhere from $750-$1000 total. Biggest factor being your paint. Best price on the hood itself is around $550 so if you're just going with a solid color for paint you could probably get it done for around $200. They don't require much clean up from the shop, maybe a little edging after transport so you won't have to shell out for your body shop to do much above wet sanding before they paint.
