The convertible with the top up reminds me of a chopped top, would like to see it on a hard top.

Mr. Blonde - Typically what guys do that chop tops is cut the brackets that the seats sit on (in our case) or in some rare cases, alter the floorpan so that the seat is somewhat recessed to make up some room.

As for if you could do it......it's like anything else. You can do *anything* to *any* car.....if you have enough money!

Remember the styling exercise on the California Cruiser. That had a chopped top!

Yea it has been done once that I know of. The same guy who built the Batmobile took a PT and went to town. I do know of one in progress but I can't confirm or deny that it is actually going to get chopped I am hoping so. Getting all the glass redone is a pain.

I have thought about this idea before. I think it would look great. I'd love to do a PT as a '50 style rat rod.

If your serious I'd look around the web or car shows. There are plenty of people that have done older cars. olskoolrodz.com and magazine might be a good spot to check out. PTeaser might be worth asking also since the cut the window down on their Roaster and offer a fiberglass top.

Glass will be the biggest problem because it has to be cut, reshaped or remade.

A lot of chop top cars change or lower the seats to make up the difference in interior height.

Based on show cars. it looks like all of the ones that have changed around the top, like the Super Cruiser, Decoma Coupe or Califonia Cruiser, are all two doors. Which means they are most likely using the convertable as the base. This would make sence since the body is reinforced thus the top would be less strutual. All they would do is remove the convertable top and then build a hard top. A four door could be done but it might be worth while to find someone who did the 4 door convertable and get the body reinforcements from them.

Anywat that's my 2 cents. I hope it helps out. I SO want to see it if you actually go ahead.

-Joe

I had a bit of time at work and looked into this a bit. I talked to a guy at Lordz of Kustomz in L.A. They do mostly hot rods. He said you'd be looking at about $5000 plus the cost of glass. The glass is more complex than what they usually do and the outsource it so he wasn't sure on the cost. Time would be about two months.
