I have booger bushings and the Hurst STS for the Turbo. Shift throws are shorter and cleaner than with the OEM shifter. how much? Some, but it is noticeable esp on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. The bushings give it a more solid feel. I did the shifter and tranny side bushin replacement. Very satisfied...don't even remember what the OEM shifter was like.

the 2-3 shift is basically a straight up motion because the lever is spring loaded to return to center automatically, on the times that i have missed third i'm either in 5th or hit the detent between 3 and 5.
i really didnt think that the hurst was all that much better than the stock one and it didnt seem to shorten the throw as much as advertised, then again i forgot to measure before. the main reason i like the hurst is that i can change the knobs and levers to fit my needs.

Speaking of shifting, even with over 20,000 on my GT, it still does not shift real smooth. I was expecting it to smooth out with time but I guess this thing will never be snot-slick.

The throws are not as short on the STS as I would have liked. I do like the fact the shifter sits higher, probably why the throws are not as short and that the shift ball is larger and fits my hand better. Best of all, it looks a heck of a lot better than the wimpy stock piece!
Gary your going to have to lower you seat to shift. |

Cutting the shaft won't cause the throw to be shorter, only cause's the shaft to be shorter. The connection points between the shifter and linkage do not change. My .02 only, yours may vary...

That's exactly what causes the throws to be shorter. Shorten the operating lever, shorten the throw. quote "I do like the fact the shifter sits higher, probably why the throws are not as short" unquote most short throw shifter kits move the pivot point higher, causing the leverage to be less. If the shifter is the same length, the throw will be less. Most stock levers are about 5-1. The knob end moves 5 inches to the linkage end moving 1 inch. Changing the upper length shortens the upper lever which changes the ratio. Changing the ratio (moving the pivot up) to 5-2 (example only) will shorten the throw, with the same length.

another way to shorten the throw is to relocate the cable at the tranny closer to the pivot point.
