Default Another question about the multi function switch

I have a 2001 PT limited w/o fogs lights. I had some problems 6 months ago with the left turn signal not blinking and changed the mfs and flasher that fixed the problem. Yesterday the wife used the hazard switch for the first time since we replaced the mfs and it blew fuse #18. I have looked for a short in the wiring harness and haven't found anything and replaced the flasher. I really don't want to give the dealer another $120 for a another mfs. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Welcome to the forums.
No need to buy from dealer...

Does it blow a new fuse? Sometimes fuses age and blow...

The harness for both stalks and the radio run down the steering column and owners have reported that the harness connections have stretched and broke from the connections and others said wires actually broke because of the stretching. Usually it has something to do with the adjustable steering wheel which moves the column. Trace the wiring and see if there's anything that could cause something like that.

Also, if youchanged the flasher unit you know how to get to the MFS. Check the two wire connections on the stalk itself for any signs something is wrong.

Thank, the dealer replaced the mfs under warranty, that's the good news. The bad news is I still have a short. Where can I find a wiring diagram?

The wiring diagram is in the back of the Haynes manual, the paperback edition of the Chilton manual and the Dealers service manual.

You might try a search on the top of this forum for 'MFS" or "Multi-function" and see all the post about the switch. There's might be a diagram or two in one of the posts.

Thanks, found the wiring diagram, and have not been able to find the short both in the column and at the lights. As soon as you plug the flasher into the mfs it blows the fuse. Is there another flasher relay someplace that the wiring diagram doesn't show?

If it doesn't show it, I don't think anyone knows about it. If it blows as soon as you put on the flasher, you have a shorted wire either in the MFS itself or the harness. Can't help any more than that. Somehow it's gotta be traced down.

Sorry to take so long to post a reply ( I hate when you don't know how a problem was solved) but for the last 10 days I have been following wires, doing continuity tests on the MFS, checking light sockets and tearing the car apart and my hair out. I called the dealer to see if the new MFS could be defective and was told that I was the only person in the last 3 years to have a problem with the MFS. The wife suggested that we buy one from Advance Auto for $49 and try that. The freakin thing worked!!! go figure!! I did a continuity test on the MFS from advance auto and it tested the same as the defective on from the dealer so I don't have a clue other than am very happy everything is back together. Thanks for all your help

Thanks for your reply. So the end result is that there IS/WAS something wrong with the dealers MFS and a new one from Advance Auto cleared up the problem.
