Unhappy A/C

We have a 2002 PT Cruiser with 82000 miles. Last week the A/C stopped working. I hear the compressor engage on and off if the A/C is on. When I attach the gauge I see it cycle from low to red to low and does not stay at any pressyre steady. Is that a charge issue...a low pressure switch???

Thanks for any help!

If you are getting low pressure, most likely there is a leak.
I would suggest investigating it first before adding more Freon.
A leak must be found first and repaired. Then you can recharge it to the proper amount. It's illegal for a shop to recharge a known leaking system.
Is your radiator fan working properly?

Well not sure if really low pressure as when the compressor kicks on jumps to red then goes right back down...is that considered low pressure?

Your compressor is trying to come on with your Air Conditioning on and the high pressure switch is shutting it down because of the low pressure in the system, that may be the surging you are reading.

You really need to answer the question about the radiator fan. Is the high and low speed on the radiator fan working properly.
