Default Powertrain-what does it cover?

This morning my transmission lever didn't put the car into gear...It had been working kind of rough lately and when I took it out of park....nothing caught and I stayed in park even though it appeared I was switching gears. My central question is---does the extended powertrain warranty that came on my 2002 PT cover transmissions and/or this kind of problem? The car is awfully new to have this problem so I'm hoping at least they will try to make things right with me at any rate. Does anyone out there know what to expect on this? Thanks a bunch!!!!

IMHO it is covered because it is part of the transmission linkage witch is covered. Now, if you took a hammer to the gear shift lever that would not be covered because of abuse.

Welcome, Annie.
Yes, transmission should be covered.
Post back after you've been to dealer and let us know how you did/what they found.

If you get out your Owner's Manual, you can read about exactly what is covered under the power train warranty. Plus, if you have more than 36,000 miles or the car is older than 3 years, all you have to pay is a $100 deductible. As long as you don't have more than 70,000 miles or the car is older than 7 years. I had to look up all that info yesterday as I think I have a bad motor mount that is causing the car to shutter upon acceleration. And of course, mileage is 38,000. And, if it is a motor mount, that is NOT covered on the Powertrain Limited warranty.....[xx(]

BigPhil,

Please start a new thread here in General PT Discussions when you get an official diagnosis.

My PT shutters during acceleration frequently! Usually around 40 mph, possibly when it changes gears, but I haven't been able to duplicate it on command, so it's hard to show it to a Chrysler technician, or even to study it to determine exactly when it happens.

It started when I got my transmission flushed by a Chrysler dealer.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

zzzhuh ,
I am almost 100% sure that is the problem. You can do this: Jack the car up on the passenger side and take the front wheel off (use a jack stand for safety). Then have someone start the car, put it into drive and gently release their foot from the brake. This will cause the disk to turn (just as if you were in motion) and upon acceleration, check to see if the motor swings to the front portion of the car. If it does, you have the same problem I do. I will know more this afternoon. How many miles do youhave. I have 38,000...

I also looked at the dirver's side half shaft and think i might be bad as well. There was a circular ring that appeared to come out of the inner boot of the half shaf joint, so the half shaft could be going out. I think it might be a combination of both....

BigPhil,

Thanks for the info, although I'm not that able to be my own mechanic, I like to know what to ask for when I go in to see one.

Mine is a '03 with 48,000 miles, and no other problems that I know of, except for the occasional shutter during acceleration.

Well no such luck to be covered by the powertrain for me. It's the transmission cable that grips up and needs to be replaced and that's not covered per the service garage at the dealership. It's not actually THE transmission or engine. The counter guy said they've seen it in other models not the PT until mine. I had a Mercury Lynx wagon that ran until almost 100,000 miles before I sold it and it never had such a major problem. It ran another 100,000 for the kid who bought it and he didn't have many problems either. Maybe it's worth looking into trading her in for a newer model-food for thought.

happyannie,

Did they fix it already?

It seems like that should be covered, but if it's not, an estimate from another transmission shop might be less.

Good Luck!
