You didn't post anything that you can get you into trouble. Most of us know that information already. The problem is that many owners are finding they bought their used PT with only one key or the owner has lost one of the two keys that came with the new PT and the owners manual pacifically states you need two valid pre-programmed keys to program a new (third) key. If you only have one, then a trip to the dealer is the only way to have it done.

Yep, I learned the hard way (but it still didn't sink in apparently). Lost a key ring with one of the keys and one of the remotes on it. Had to buy both from the dealer and have them reprogram them. Very pricey!!
Still haven't learned because I haven't bought an extra key yet to program while I still have two keys to allow me to do it myself. My bad!

Will the key open the door if it isn't programmed or does the chip control that as well? I only have one key and would at least like something to use to open the door if needed, but not to start the car.

I keep a non-transponder key in my wallet. I'm in and out of my car 20 times a day. Invariably about once a week I'll lock the keys in it. A non-transponder key cost me $1.50 from Lowes. Has paid for itself many times over.
