SuGamer, it's a generation thing. You ask us why a V8; cause it's what we think of when big power is the name. We like the sound, the massive torque, the visuals, the comfort level of the known. We Like our backsides wiggling when the tires smoke.
We ask you why put out 400 HP to the front wheels? There isn't a reliable trans/diff/axle package that is commonly available and/or easy to install. Your answer is because it's cool new territory that hasn't been done a thousand times (although it's getting close now).
Who is right? Different horses for different riders....

There is one that was for racing. I think it was sponsored by a credit company or something like that. it did 9.6 at 136 MPH. the rear window had a 8.80 dial-in...
I have the video somewhere

BTW, I have nothing to do with the people who did it... it is just an amazing video that I kept.

I was behind one of the new Mustang GT's the other morning going to work and I stayed behind him stop light to stop light just to hear him go through the gears! It really sounded good.

Hey guys, I know all about V8's. I have built and rebuilt several small block and big block V8's. But I just love the fact that I can whip a v8's butt with my "4 banger". Plus it took alot more for me to build up a 500hp Chevy V8 or Mopar V8 compared to making a PT turbo reach that same hp amount. I blew away a Mustang GT today (late ninties) and when I slowed down (after I had him by about 5 car lengths from a stop no less), he finally passed me and flipped me off. Made me laugh hard that it pissed him off that a STOCK '05 PTGT dusted him.

As for the Tranny/axle package, yes there are available. Power Demon makes an auto 41TE tranny for us that is guaranteed up to 450hp and 450wtq. The Axles Shop, and other manufacturers make Stage 3 axles for the PT's that are guaranteed to 500hp and beyond. Tommy can sell you a package. If it's V8 sound you want, get a 3" exhaust with dual deep tone mufflers. But if it's power you want, for a few thousand you can get massive amounts of power, instead some spending massive amounts of money and labor to drop a V8 in.

I don't know if this qualifies as a PT Cruiser:

(You need to scroll to the right to see the photo at that link.)

But Judging from the drivers seat position, it's gotta have at least a V-8. I assume it's rear wheel drive based on the wheelie bar.
