Default Check Engine Light

Ok, I am sure this is covered in many other topics but I just wanted to ask.
My check engine light came on yesterday. I did the test by turning the car off and on four times and pressing in the odometer button to get codes, but it didn't return any.

So what could be causing the check engine light to come on? All the fluids have been flushed according to reccomendations?

Also, go to an AutoZone, AdvanceAuto, etc - they'll read the code for free.

I love you guys. Took it to Autozone. It was a cylinder 4 misfire. Doesn't look like something that I can replace on my own though. The huge intake things look intimidating.

Acutally it's not, if you've done any kind of work on an engine before. You do have to have the right tools, and that includes a torque wrench. Sounds like it's time for the plugs/wires to be changed. That's the cause of most (95% +-) of most of the mis-fires.

Yup.
If yours is a turbo, get copper Champions, gap at 0.038. For non-turbo, Champion Platinums gap at 0.042. Best wires are Cranes at RaceAndStreet.Com.

Let me give you an alternative and that is MOPAR High Performance plug wires and for plugs NGK Iridium and gap them at the factory gap.

Hey Cruisers....New to the forum. Bikerchick1 is my girlfriend. She has an 06 Limited with an automatic/ no turbo.

She has been having a problem with the engine light coming on. First, she went to Autozone to pull codes. They said it was her cap (had a locking one) so she went back to an OEM cap. Light went out. Fast forward a couple weeks, light comes on again. They tell her to get an air induction/ fuel system cleaning. Big bucks as you all know. I find this forum and find out you can do the same thing by adding a fuel system cleaning product. We could not find BG44 or Redline so we settled with the Lucas Oil additive. Light went out for a day or two then came back on.

Fast forward to today. We trade vehicles so I can troubleshoot it. I learned how to pull codes from this forum. Great info. I do both tests, no codes produced with the odmeter reset test but I got P0456 and P0457 on the on/acc test. P0456, per the code legend on this forum, is a small EVAP system leak. P0457 is no where to be found. Any info on this code will be helpful. I jacked the rear end up and checked the fuel fill vent line from the top (as high as I could get) and back down to the tank. I did find that the end that goes into the tank will slide back and forth a bit in and out of the tank. Possibility ?

I disconnected the neg side of the battery to attempt to get the light to go out with no result.

Soooooo..........Any help would be greatly appreciated before I have to wave the white flag and take it to the Stealer (at $78 an hour labor).

Welcome to the forum. Both your codes lead to the same thing.....

# P0456-EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK
# P0457-EVAP SYSTEM - LOOSE FUEL CAP

The cap has to be turned for at least 3 clicks of the lock when your finished filling up. Once it's on (the check engine light) it might take a day or 3 to go out as the sensor has to check to see if the fault is cleared a number of times.

So, as soon as you (or bilkerchick ) see that fault, get out and turn the cap a few times and then wait a day or so for the light to go out. If it doesn't, you might want to invest in a new cap.

Disconnecting the negative terminal usually clears the code but not on this particular fault.

I deleted your other post as it was a duplicate of this one.

Thanks for the info. After I posted (sorry to duplicate), I went and topped off the tank, turned the cap about a half dozen times (new cap by the way) and then headed for the parts store. Bought a new PCV valve for a rough idle with A/C on (another issue). Anyway....I like the forum, a lot of good info. This PT isn't like working on my 50 Plymouth ! But I'll learn it. Thanks again. We'll see what happens in a couple three days with that light.
