Knocking noise from rear end

My PT gotten a knocking noise from the rear end lately. I have installed new bushing shocks and sway bar BUT I have checked them and all nice and tight.

I have notice that my bumper gotten a little loss and the rear fenderwell plastic trim can actuall move and they do make knocking noise but nothing that loud......

The sound goes comes from both side and some times sound like it's from the middle........I honestly don't havethe time and $ to bother with this matter just curious what it is

Stock exhaust? Check exhaust hangers.
Another is the spare tire. Also check the jack isn't moving around - I wrapped mine in rags.[:I]

Might be the bell crank bushing on the Watts Link. Early PT's have know to wear them out quickly, causing a banging sound. A new bell crank assy (bushings aren't sold separately) goes for about $75 at the dealers. Includes the redesigned bushing and it's a pretty easy r&r. Just make sure the bell crank is in the right position (it's marked which side goes up).

wow !! this sounds just what i went thru drove myself nuts looking at the wheel wells etc, it turned out to be in the roof!! if was the foam insulation around the sunroof !! good luck keep us posted

it's diff NOT the roof it's coming from the bottom

Spare tire.....checked no problem
Wheel well.....could be but not that loud
the center watts.....could be BUT the sound some time comes from the extreme end of the left or right side of the rear end.

It's driving me crazy.

Someone had a problem with the gas filler tube banging creating a noise. Just another idea.

COULD BE it from like the inside BUT it goes to the other side too so .....really need to check it when i have time

I agree that it sounds like the bell crank. Had to replace this earlier this year on my 2001 PT. First though the spare tire was rattling around. Adjusted it, sound was still there.

It was under $80.00 to fix by the local mechanic.

unfortunately I do not have time lately so I just have to bear with it for the time being. I did have my mech check everything and it seems that everything is tight. My bumper did got damage so he said that the noise could be coming from the inside of the bumper a loss bolt or something[:I]
