Default strut question

Those of you with older PT's, mine is an 02 limited, how do you know when the front struts are going bad?
I have 62000 miles on it and I'm starting to get some shock noise.
My dealer mechanic says, not to worry, that noise is quite common and replacing the struts may not fix the noise, just the car growing old.
What would be the average cost to change out those struts?
And what type or brand is best?
Thanks
Joe

I went 87,000 miles on my '02 and never changed any shocks.
I was alone in the car most of the time - ride was fine.

Problem is that the shocks and struts deteriorate so slowly that one cant really tell when the do go bad exept when they leak fluid. As a general rule gas shocks are built to go about 100,000 miles. So if you have over 50,000 miles you are at half life. If performance is not high on your list than go till yours leak, you can feel them go bad over bumps, the car bounces more than once over large road undulations, or you put on 100,000 miles.
